All the Lighting We Picked for Our Primary Bathroom and Closet
THE FARMHOUSE
Last week we installed the lighting in our long-winded primary bathroom and closet remodel and I wanted to share what we picked. Because I love this lighting! Plus I’ve learned over and over again that you really can’t have too much light in a bathroom (or kitchen!). This space has 5 different sources. Let me show you where it all goes…
psst: you can catch up on this remodel project here
Excuse the iPhone photos, I couldn’t wait to share ;) That beautiful light fixture is my very favorite swing-arm sconce from my very favorite lighting store, Rejuvenation. I’ve used this same fixture in the Dexter House kitchen (who remembers that project?!), our primary bedroom, Farmhouse entry, and now here. They come in all different finishes and are assembled nearby in Portland, OR. Isn’t it pretty?!
Design considerations
In addition to the sconce, we have can lights, a flush mount, pendants, and the very best kind of light….natural light from the windows ;) All the lighting (with the exception of the cans) feels handcrafted and solid and traditional. Like the lights could be exact replicas of those made back in 1912 when our house was built. For some cohesion from room to room, I used the same fixtures and shade shapes that I have elsewhere in the house. The swing-arm sconce I already told you about, but the flush mounts I selected for the bathroom, closet, and nook are smaller versions of the light fixture we have in the adjacent bedroom. I love to repeat details from space to space.
I will say that I’m not usually a big fan of recessed lighting in old houses - it often feels too modern - but we did add some here for functionality. These cans are only 4” cans and look pretty minimal.
Lighting Plan
Here’s where all those lights go in our primary suite.
Here’s a closeup of the closet, nook, and bathroom lighting…
That looks like a lot of lighting, but honestly I don’t think it’s overkill in the least. Bathrooms and kitchens are notoriously under-lit in my opinion. That’s probably the biggest mistake Garrett and I made when we started remodeling old houses a decade plus ago. We’ve learned to add at least 3 different types of lighting to functional spaces (like kitchens and bathrooms) when we can and more is better!
