A Quick Door Refresh at the Poplar Cottage
THE POPLAR COTTAGE
We haven’t talked much about the Poplar Cottage lately - we’re deep into rough-in and there’s just not much to look at except dust and studs 😉. But we did recently give the front door a little makeover and I wanted to share it today. Honestly, this door bothered me since we first bought the house. I’ve been itching to replace it, but that wasn’t in the cards this year (maybe next?!), so we opted for an inexpensive refresh instead. Have a look…
Isn’t she cute?! One week ago the front door was gray and blah and looking a little haggard. And let me just ask that before you judge us too harshly for the state of it, know that the inside of the house doesn’t even have a toilet currently. So hopefully you can forgive us for not noticing how far we’d let the front slide. Eek.
Mmmhmm.
For the new look, I imagined a black door. I’m not exactly sure why, but when someone on Instagram told me that houses with black doors sell for more, I felt reassured (I can neither confirm or debunk that statement, but I’m here for it). Luckily we had a can of BM Onyx on hand. I probably would have picked an even darker black, but free was too good of a price to pass up and I’m happy with how it turned out.
Paint really can work miracles. We added two coats of BM’s Aura outdoor paint in semi gloss (in Onyx) to this door and called it good. We also replaced the hardware with a smart lock that also has a keyed entry as backup. We went with a handle set here instead of a knob and I think it lends a bit more craft to what would otherwise be a very plain door.
Sources
I wanted to include the sources for the Poplar front door. I found similar items and shared the links below for those items I don’t have a source for (like the screen door). And since so many people asked for our bells, which I found at our local nursery (a great spot to look for your’s locally!), I linked to some great online alternatives. Can’t wait to share more on the Poplar remodel soon(ish)!
