The Dexter House // Why We Switched to A Smart Water Heater
THE DEXTER HOUSE
One thing we’ve been thinking about here on the Grit and Polish is how to make our life easier, and as part of this push we’ve been making some upgrades on the Dexter house. This place is a short-term rental in Seattle about 2 hours from home. We started with a smart lock because guests would lock themselves out or lose the key and now we’ve partnered with Rheem on a smart water heater. Rheem®’s Gladiator smart electric water heater lets us monitor the condition of our water heater at the Dexter House from anywhere! We can also set a schedule to maximize energy savings, and it will send an alert and automatically shut off if it detects a leak. Did you know smart water heaters were a thing? Today we wanted to share more about our smart electric water heater and all the benefits.

Do you guys recognize this bathroom? It’s the master bathroom we added to the Dexter House during our initial renovation, and it was the first place I tested out our new electric water heater after installation. But before we talk about the benefits of a smart electric water heater, let’s talk about why we made the switch.
Why we made the switch
Our previous water heater was old. 28 years to be precise (BTW, you can usually find the manufacture date on the side of the water heater). So we jumped at the chance to work with Rheem on an upgrade to a smart electric water heater. Once we decided to change it out, a professional installed the new Gladiator and took the old one away. The install was quick and easy and it was up and running less than 2 hours later.
Features
The Gladiator integrates with wifi to the EcoNet® app on our phones. It sends us an alert any time there’s a leak or it needs service. And in the app we can adjust the temperature, set it to vacation mode, and check on energy usage from the past week/month/year to help us manage energy consumption. Pretty slick!
After the install was done, I had to take a bath…you know, to make sure the water heater was working properly. Spoiler: it was ;)
A couple notes: it installs like any other water heater, and you can find the Gladiator at Home Depot!
Thanks to Rheem for sponsoring this post!
