All About the Poplar Cottage Windows and Doors

THE POPLAR COTTAGE

Let’s talk windows and doors. The Poplar Cottage has some beautiful ones! Back in 2020 when we started the remodel (yup, it’s stilllll going), swapping out the absolutely awful 1970s metal windows was top of our list. Standard vinyl replacements were a pass since we wanted something that would be in keeping with the character of this cute little home. Think quaint and simple with a hint of craft. We looked at a few options, but ultimately my heart was set on wood or wood-clad windows. And thankfully JELD-WEN had a perfect option, customizable to our existing openings. Let me show you…

Windows are an item that can really elevate the design of a home, but are often overlooked. I think we hit the bulls-eye at the Poplar Cottage with JELD-WEN’s Siteline wood-clad option. Back in 2020 we approached JELD-WEN about collaborating on our remodel and we’re thrilled to have their windows and doors throughout. They’re showstoppers and we’ve had lots of neighborhood folks walking by tell us how cute they are. We couldn’t agree more!

Design

For anyone taking on a substantial remodel or new build, JELD-WEN makes it easy to achieve a cohesive look between all your windows and doors with curated style lines. We were going pretty big (for us!) with the cottage renovation so we checked out the four different design categories - Farmhouse, Simply Modern,Updated Traditional, and Coastal - to see which was the best fit and then selected from the pre-populated options. Each line has windows and doors at a variety of budgets that all work together to elevate the design. This way you can pick and choose within any of the style line and know every piece will look great together. I strive for “a fresh take on classic design” in our old houses so we landed in the Updated Traditional line and it's just perfect for this little cottage.

What we picked

Siteline Clad-wood windows. These customizable windows are made of painted Auralast (pre-treated) pine on the interior and aluminum clad on the exterior, for lower maintenance. Since we were retrofitting existing openings, we opted for replacement windows in casement, double-hung and awning styles, all made to our exact opening dimensions. They come with energy-efficient glass and a 20-year warranty. I opted for Brilliant White exterior color (there are 27 options) and a Simple 4-lite colonial grid  pattern that feels both classic and fresh.

The double hung windows are really versatile. They open from the top and bottom and tilt-out for easy cleaning.

Smooth-Pro Fiberglass exterior doors. These are strong, durable, and attractive exterior doors and I couldn’t love them more. We have 2 exterior doors and for both I opted for ½ view, 4 lite, 1-panel. They have a similar look to the windows, but they’re black (though they’re paintable, so we can always change our minds ;). These doors are minimal maintenance and really beautiful.

Molded wood composite interior doors. We only have 3 interior doors on the main floor and I wanted a simple, classic look, which we could achieve with these doors. They’re affordable, stylish, and environmentally-friendly, made of a molded-wood composite. We ordered them to our existing opening sizes, making retrofits incredibly easy. Also available in Authentic wood with engineered wood core for better stability against environmental changes.

For anyone curious about JELD-WEN’s other style lines, here are the definitions of all 4…

Farmhouse: Born out of necessity, farmhouses were about function and purpose. Although farmhouses aren’t limited to the farm anymore, the defining elements of the style—simplicity, natural light, and authenticity—still hold true in the modern incarnations.

Simply Modern: Where leading-edge design and sustainable materials coexist in one stunning blueprint.

Updated traditional: a blend of classic and modern design elements for calm and comfortable living. It pays homage to local architecture while integrating modern trends like clean lines, natural light, and open floorplans. These homes are built for today without losing their link to the past.

Coastal: An abundance of natural light with traditional wood touches.

And if you’re not sure what your home’s design style is, they have a quiz to help you figure it out.

What an upgrade these windows and doors are for our little Poplar Cottage!

Thanks to JELD-WEN for working with us on this project! Design and thoughts are all our own.
