Furniture for our Combo Sitting/Dinning Room

THE POPLAR COTTAGE

The combo sitting/dinning room at the Poplar Cottage is coming together! After installing roman shades last week, we dug out a vintage table from our basement and got a delivery from Pottery Barn and the room officially has furniture. It’s not 100% finished but it’s getting there and I can’t tell you how good that feels after 4 years of renovating (eeek!). Today I wanted to show you how this room is shaping up and talk about what’s next. Let’s get into it…

My Nana’s table

For the dinning part of this combo room, we brought in a vintage table. Originally I had different vintage table in mind, but this one seems to be right. It hails from my great grandmother who had a furniture store in Longview, WA at the end of her life and always treated us great-grandkids to boxes of cookies whenever we visited. She died in her late 90s and left us quite a few furniture treasures and treasured memories, too :)

I love to think of my great grandmother (we called her Nana - not to be confused with Garrett’s mom, Nana) using this table! I suspect it was more of a side table for her, rather than a dining table. But for a small space like this, I think a 48” circular table will be nice for our family of 5. And no, we don’t have any inserts for the table, we long ago lost those if there were ever any.

This room gets the best light with the southern and western-facing windows, so it’s really where you want to be in the afternoons and evenings, and I’m anticipating some lovely long meals around this table.

the couch details

The other anchor in this room is the beautiful blue couch from Pottery Barn. I was lucky enough to get to work with Pottery Barn on this space, and I spent hours debating over every detail of this couch (which was kindly gifted to us). I opted for the 79.5” long sofa with bench cushion, down-blend wrapped cushions, and performance fabric in chambray weathered basketweave. The long bench cushion should make for less crumbs getting trapped and the performance fabric will help resist stains and fading and whatever my kids throw at it. Fingers crossed it can indeed stand up to them ;)

More details

The rug is another feature I pondered over for awhile. But when I saw this flat woven one in person at the Pottery Barn store, I knew it was perfect for this space. More details from Pottery Barn - the basket and cozy throw, the art (which was very hard to photograph without glare in this room but I’m obsessed with!), the cushion, and lamp.

What’s next

We still need some dining chairs on the opposite side of the table, but I think I have the perfect ones. They’re hand-me-down bentwood chairs that are currently taken apart, partly-sanded, and in a box. Another project to tackle at a later date :). I’d also love a small bookcase or storage cabinet to help with the ‘sitting room’ component of this room, but we’ll see. I’m just loving being in the furnishing stage of this project and can’t wait to see what pops up on FBMP and at thrift shops!

A wider view

Before I leave you, I wanted to zoom out and share a few pics of what’s beyond the space - from the front door to the bedroom.
