6 DIY Projects You Can Tackle During Quarantine

We’re entering week 5 of quarantine around here and I can’t tell you how thankful we are for our Farmhouse and this wonderful and crazy family to hunker down with. Staying at home is definitely a privilege and one we’re not taking for granted…but of course staying at home means spending 24/7 at our home, staring at all those projects we want to do. And if you’re anything like us, you’re itching to get started on more home improvement projects than you can count right now. So today I wanted to share 6 quarantine-friendly DIY projects that are totally do-able for those at home right now. Bonus: they’re all pretty budget-friendly!

I’ve picked out six DIY projects that are all relatively easy. They range from decor to bring-out-the-power-tools kind of projects but aside from #6, they’re all beginning level. I mentioned they’re budget friendly but some of these improvements might even save you money in the long haul (I’m looking at you garden and laundry airer). In no particular order, here are 6 DIYs to tackle while at home during quarantine…

The Grit and Polish - Farmhouse Daphne Pink Curtains open.jpg

One // Pinch Pleat Curtains

Time: 2 hours +

Changing out curtains can completely change a space. We used inexpensive IKEA curtains in Daphne’s room and pinch-pleated them for an upgraded look. With a little thread and needle, we took these $25 curtain panels from good to great! Find the tutorial here.

The Grit and Polish - How to Paint Cabinets 2.jpg

Two // Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets (with a brush or roller)

Time: 2+ Days

Paint is amazing. And it can give your kitchen a brand new look in as little as two days. Our ‘paint by hand’ method requires a brush or roller (no sprayer!) so it’s relatively DIY-friendly and ‘we-live-in-the-house’ friendly too, although you’ll need a spot to set the cabinet doors while you paint them. You can find the tutorial here.

The Grit and Polish - Porch Kitchen Shelves and Cabs 3.2.jpg

Three // Build a Shaker Peg Shelf

Time: 1+ Hours

We lovvveee shaker peg shelves. Have you noticed? We’ve used them in bathrooms, laundry rooms, closets, kitchens, the list keeps growing. They’re easy to build, inexpensive, functional, and they give a nostalgic nod to any space they’re in. You’ll need a special bit for this project so plan ahead and get it ordered on Amazon before starting. You can find the tutorial here.

Four // Plan a garden

Time: 1 day +

The planning part of a garden is free, which is my favorite price. We had four main goals when it came to planning out our garden last year, and I think they’d work for any space. Not everyone is going to have a huge space for a garden like this, but even if you’re looking to do a single raised bed garden, or a vertical garden indoors, our planning process should help. You can find that here. And if you want to see more of this space, check out our garden reveal & sources.

The Grit and Polish - Dexter Kitchen Faucet Vintage Art.jpg

Five // Change Out Your Kitchen faucet

Time: 1+ hours

Changing out your faucet is relatively easy and can add years back onto your life. Ha! Okay, maybe not the ‘add years back onto your life’ part but there is something really satisfying about a properly-functioning, attractive kitchen faucet. We like to think of the kitchen faucet as the centerpiece of a kitchen and it’s definitely something you use ALL the time when you’re home 24/7. So if your’s is broken, leaky, or just plan ugly…fix it already! You can find Garrett’s tutorial here.

The Grit and Polish - Farmhouse Laundry Hanging Dryer Airer.jpg

Six // Build Your Own Hanging Laundry Airer

Time: 1 Day +

I can’t tell you how much I love our laundry airer. It has completely changed how we do laundry at the Farmhouse in the best possible way. It’s meant less energy consumption because we’re using the dryer less and our clothes are lasting longer because we’re not drying them (well my jeans, workout clothes, and underwear at least). Seriously, it’s the best addition to a laundry room ever! You can find the tutorial here.

Wishing you a productive week…if that’s what you’re looking for. Or a perfectly still week or one where you keep your head above water. Stay healthy out there!
