How to Celebrate a House's Birthday

THE FARMHOUSE

When our Farmhouse turned 110-years old last year, I asked our community for ideas on how to celebrate. Like so many of us reaching big milestones, this old gal deserves to be celebrated! I’m sharing just how we did that plus a crowdsourced list of other ideas. Read on for some great ideas on how to celebrate a house’s milestone birthdays…

Our Farmhouse was built in 1912 and ever since we moved in (in 2016), I have been excited to celebrate her 110th birthday. Initially, I had planed to throw a birthday party for the Farmhouse over the summer, but between having the farmhouse painted and well, life in general, it just never quite happened. After mulling it over for a while, and asking all of you for ideas, we settled on having a custom portrait of the Farmhouse painted by this artist. Didn’t she do an amazing job?! I’m so excited to frame and hang her watercolor in honor of the Farmhouse’s birthday. Here’s to the next 110-years of this beautiful, old Farmhouse!

I received such great ideas on how to celebrate a house’s big day that I had to share a few more ideas…

How to celebrate a House’s Birthday

  • Throw a year-built themed party

  • Plant a tree or special bush

  • Commission a portrait of your house from an artist

  • Frame an old photo or blueprint of your house

  • Bury a time capsule outside (or in the walls)

  • Give the house a name

  • Dig through your local archives or hire a historian to unearth the house’s history

  • Have a plaque made for the outside of the house

  • Do a special project or renovation project

  • Host an open house

  • Get her a gift, like a deep clean ;)

  • Decorate the house in party lights or old-fashioned fabric bunting

  • Send a birthday card to the house (or to it’s new owners, if you’ve sold it)

  • Have a Seance

  • Post a banner letting the community know how old the house is

  • Have a block party

  • Commission an article in the local newspaper
