A Breakdown of our Primary Bathroom Renovation Budget
THE FARMHOUSE
We wrapped up our primary bathroom remodel earlier this year and I wanted to share what it cost with you today. We’re big believers in sharing renovation budgets - it’s the only way to get the full picture of a remodel IMO. This bathroom is full of craftsmanship and custom details, and not surprisingly, it cost a lot. More than our kitchen, actually. Let’s break it down…
psst: all sources are below
For context, I wanted to share where we started with this bathroom.
Before
This was a big remodel considering we didn’t plan to move any of the plumbing fixtures. But in classic old-house remodel fashion, one thing lead to another and what was originally just going to be a bathroom ‘refresh’ became a full-on change-the-floor-plan kind of remodel.
Budget
A few notes on the budget…I’m just sharing the bathroom today, not the closet since we haven’t finished that out yet. Also, you’ll notice that there’s no labor in this budget since we DIY’d just about everything (except the vanity and wainscot). The tile work, the plumbing, the curtains, the painting of the tub - it was all done with our own two hands. There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to remodeling an old house, and it takes time to build up your skills, but after 12 years of doing this, we’re really proud of the workmanship we (okay, mostly Garrett) have accomplished here.
We were lucky to work with some sponsors on this bathroom and I’ve denoted products we received for free with ‘*’ and listed their retail value, shown currently on their websites. Of course if we were buying the items, I’d shop sales, and indeed I try to share anytime I see them on sale on Instagram.
Here’s what the space cost…

Twenty-six thousand dollars is a lot of money to spend on a bathroom. It’s a lot of money, period. We prioritized craftsmanship with this project and that showed in the final price.
But I will say that this primary suite is a pure JOY to use. It’s a total privilege to get to shower/bathe/get-ready in here and just about every night, Garrett or I mention how lovely the shower is, or what a pleasure it is to look out over our view while brushing teeth, or what a beauty the woodwork is. The space feels so right in this house. And in the end, we love this bathroom and it was worth the expense to us.

What’s next?
Garrett and I planned to put our Peloton into the wallpapered nook and build some drawers into the closet but instead, we took a pause. One of my favorite parts about living in a house while you’re renovating it, is that you get the opportunity to tailer the spaces to how you use them. So instead of rushing to finish the closet, we hung up our clothes and are giving ourselves time to see what we want/need in here. Home takes time ❤️
That’s all today. Thanks for being here!
