Our Summer 2022 Garden Tour

a summer garden tour from 2022

THE FARMHOUSE

Welcome to our garden! Every year I like to share a tour of this space around now to show what we’re growing and how we’re using the space. This year I tried vertical growing and some new flower varieties and I’m in love with it all. Come on in and let me show you around…

We were setting up for a gathering when I took these photos, hence the table linens and dress (a lend from my sis). I love seeing this space full of food and people - it’s perfect for parties! Anywho, I have a ton of photos for you today along with the layout of our garden and sources. Let’s get into it!

Video tour

While I LOVE sharing photos of this space (and there’s PLENTY below), I think it’s easier to get a sense of this space in video format. So Garrett borrowed our 9-year-old’s drone and got some footage (btw if you happen to be in the market for a drone, we have this one and are really pleased with it - I’d just recommend ordering extra propellers for when you crash ;) Hope you enjoy the video…

The Garden Layout

Our garden gate is maybe 50’ from our backdoor and we’re back and forth all summer long. This is our main outdoor hangout space, our dining al’ fresco spot, and, of course, our garden. We have six raised beds in here and we plant veggies, herbs, and flowers every year. We also have a pear tree, cherry tree, raspberries, and grapes that line the fence. I’ll share more about the plants in a sec. But first, here’s the layout of our garden…

Dining Al Fresco

This time of year, we eat a lot of meals in our garden. We have a couple of metal trays that we use to carry all of our food and dining ware back and forth. The table itself is a DIY that Garrett and I built over a decade ago. We’ve hauled it with us to 4 houses now and we leave it out year round to age as it will. It’s rough and sturdy and perfect for this space.

We added the vintage potting sink out here last year. It’s plumbed with potable water so we use it to fill water glasses and do quick produce washes and whatnot. Verrrryyyy handy when the kitchen is so far from the garden.

Vertical growing

This year we added some vertical elements in the garden by way of 3 arched trellises. It’s been a great way to extend the growing space in our garden plus I was just craving a little something different out here this year. We have ‘magic beans’ growing up on both sides of the trellises (aka scarlet runner beans), which Nana started for me. I’m hoping they’ll totally cover the trellises before the first fall freeze hits!

BTW these trellises came from a local garden shop (Ravenna Gardens in Seattle). I looked all over online for them and found something similar, which I added to the sources section below.

Outdoor furniture

This outdoor furniture has gotten a lot of use in it's four summers out here! It’s teak and I haven’t done any oil or sanding, so it’s weathered into a nice gray brown. Eventually I’ll probably restore it, but for now, I love the weathered look. btw our furniture was discontinued 😏 but I found a similar teak sofa with gray cushions and put it in the sources below.

The Plants!

A garden really is all about the plants! And this year, with the late, cold Spring we had, I opted to use a lot of starts rather then directly sowing seeds like I usually do. We have kale, lettuce, beets, carrots, and chard in our ‘greens’ bed, which is covered with Garrett’s DIY bed cover. There’s also an herb bed with rhubarb and a bed with tomatoes and peppers. And of course…flowers!

Monrovia helped us select flowers for our three cut flower beds this year. We’ve been lucky enough to work with them for a few seasons now and they’re one of the best growers out there. We’ve loved their flowers and so have the local bees and hummingbirds! Here are the flowers we added to our garden this year (click on the image to learn more about each variety).

Flowers have brought so much color and life to our garden (and our life too ;). The Bee-You Bee Balm and SunBelievable Sunflowers have attracted so many bees to our garden this year. And the hummingbirds have been loving the Harlequin Beardtongue and Kudos Dwarf Agastache. My personal favorite flower this year, if I had to pick one, are our FloralBerry St. Johns’s Wort plants. They’re just so whimsical and fun! You can check out more on all of these flower varieties here.
