A Darling Chaise Lounge

THE FARMHOUSE

I fell head over heels in love with a chaise lounge on Facebook Marketplace last week. Buuuut when I shared the listing on Instagram, no one seemed to share my enthusiasm (except maybe one or two of you ;) . In all honesty, I had a few reservations myself - the fabric and colors were hard to make out in the listing photo - but I saw quality and potential so scooped it up anyway. And I’m so glad I did, because it is stunning!

In fairness to the naysayers, the listing photo was pretty bad. It was shot in a basement and the colors were off and the fabric had a strange sheen to it. But something about it made me think that maybe, possibly, the chaise just might be amazing! I chalked the bad photo up to one of those ‘beware a poorly-lit listing photo’ situations, which is actually where you can find a deal IMO. Here’s the original listing photo…

So much better in person, right?!

In case ‘chaise lounge’ isn’t part of your everyday vocabulary, let’s talk about what it is…

What is a chaise lounge?

A chaise lounge is essentially an upholstered long chair. You can sit on it and stretch your legs out. The style originally came from France and was called chaise longue (“long chair”), but when English speakers got their hands on it in the 1700s, the name migrated to ‘chaise lounge’ (more on that here). There are lots of variations on chaise lounges - sometimes they look more like long chairs and sometimes they look more like small, backless sofas - a versatile style indeed.

I’ve been looking for a piece like this for our bedroom for years now. Chaise lounges make a lovely perch to read, watch a show, or take a nap from, especially when you have rather large corners (which the bedrooms in our Farmhouse do). When I saw this one, I actually thought it might be a cheery addition to our living room, but in the end, the scale and color worked best in our 5-year-old daughter’s room. And boy does she love it (dare I say even more than her mama)! There may be too much pink going on in here for me now, but we shall see…

Skirts are charming!

Can we talk about the skirting? Quite a few people suggested I remove the skirt from the bottom of the chaise, but people…skirts are charming! I actually think the skirt is the main reason this chaise is so charming (the tufted back helps too). Plus skirts are in. If you don’t believe me, hop over to Heidi Caillier’s feed and feast your eyes on skirted chairs and couches galore. They are definitely ‘grandma’s house’ in the most cozy, charming way!

When I finally got a peek at the chaise lounge in person, I snapped a quick video and sent it to my sis (she was one of those early naysayers). And she responded in seconds with “I’m an idiot. It looks like a $2000 chaise!”. And I think she’s probably right (about the cost, not the idiot part ;) A custom piece like this with well-crafted details is expensive. But my price secondhand on Facebook Marketplace was $90. It’s down-filled, smells great, and the fabric is in really good shape. Worth every penny!

What do you think? Love it? Hate it? Of course Daphne, our 5-year-old, loves it in her room, and what more could this mama want?!
