The New Exterior Lighting at the Farmhouse + a Few More Updates
THE FARMHOUSE
We’re switching gears back to the Farmhouse’s exterior that we finished just in time to move 🙃 The new lighting really is lovely though and perfectly compliments this simple, classic country exterior. So today I wanted to show you all the new lighting and a few other exterior updates we made this summer. Can I just say, Wowza! this home is looking so much better than it did even a year ago. Just wait for the before-and-after’s in this post! Let’s get into it…

Psst catch up on this project with these posts: all the lighting we picked up for the exterior and help us decide on exterior lighting
And real quick because I know someone’s going to ask…the house is painted in SW Dover White with SW Laurel Woods windows. It’s simple and classic and will never go out of style (more on the paint job here). Okay, onto the lighting. We’re going to circle the house today, starting with the back doors.
The East Entrance (Mudroom)
LIGHTING: this wall sconce, copper
This is the main back door to the Farmhouse and it gets a ton of use. But the crumbling concrete steps and minimal lighting wasn’t doing much for it. So we gave it a little makeover this summer.

We swapped the sconce for one of my fav from Rejuvenation, this wall sconce in copper. It was a debate on metal finishes around here, but the copper feels just right in the end. Garrett also added a small cedar landing and stairs where the old, crumbling concrete stairs were.
And here’s a very satisfying before-and-after of this back door for ya. The first photo was taken September 2022 and I’m pretty sure we took that shot because we had pressure-washed the signed and cleaned up for our Labor Day guests and thought the house was looking great. Ha! Fast forward to September 2023 and the house looks a whole different level of great.
We finished this high-traffic deck with Penofin just like we did the chicken coop roof. Garrett likes Penofin because it’s a high-quality stain that extends the look of cedar.
The West Entrance (Laundry Room)
LIGHTING: this wall sconce, copper
I’ve always loved this view of the house from the north-west corner, but the concrete steps were a little rough and there was no light fixture. So we got busy…
We added a copper wall sconce out here for some much needed light and then topped the concrete steps with cedar and hand rails. I love the look of the new cedar against the old concrete, but the wood will darken and gray-out over time. I skipped the Penofin on these stairs to encourage the aging process a little more so the wood can blend in with the concrete foundation wall for a more continuous look.
The Front Entrance
LIGHTING: wall sconce, ceiling light
It took me awhile to decide on lighting for the front porch. The house is all farmhouse but the covered porch felt like it needed something a little fancier then the industrial wall pendants we used at the back entrances. So we went with these slightly more-formal (yet still fun) sconces and ceiling light and I them! Have a look…

And with the lights on…
The before-and-after’s on this side of the house are all about paint and lighting. And better photography skills ;) The before’s are both from 2016 on the day we moved in and in that first one, our now 8-year-old is crawling down the walkway because he hadn’t even taken his first steps yet. Cue the tears.
Gosh I just love seeing the final projects at this old Farmhouse come together. Isn’t she a beauty?!
