We Bought a $400 Blender (And Why It’s Worth Every Penny!)

THE FARMHOUSE

Last week Garrett and I went to Costco and walked out with a $400 blender. That’s a heck of a lot of money for a blender (!!!) but we bought it without himming or hawing. There was no sweating at the checkout line or wondering if we should wait for the next sale. Because our 6-year-old Blendtec recently went kaput and living without a high-powered blender just wasn’t something we wanted to do.

So today I wanted to explain why a good-quality/high-powered blender is an essential appliance in our kitchen. Plus I’m sharing why we opted for the Vitamix Explorian Series 64oz E320 super pack (the blender without the 'super pack' costs $269) this time around and why we think it’s worth every penny!

an essential appliance

The Vitamix isn’t just any blender. It can make perfectly smooth smoothies, soups, sauces, and crepe batter. It can even cook soup with the heat created by the blades. We use the blender every single day in our kitchen. And I’d give-up my dishwasher before I’d give up my Vitamix. Yes, seriously.

Before the Vitamix, we had a Blendtec (an older version of this one) for over six years. To put that in perspective, that’s as long as we’ve been parents. We were really happy with it and we considered buying the exact same one.

a good blender means healthier eating

The best part of buying that high-powered blender all those years ago is that smoothies, purees, and smooth soups became a daily part of our family’s diet. And it meant way more fruit and veggies for all of us. It’s funny that a countertop appliance could change the way you eat - make you healthier - but a high-powered blender certainly did for us and that’s exactly why it’s a MUST in our kitchen.

Why Vitamix

So why did we opt for the Vitamix this go around? In part because that’s what Costco had this time (we also bought our Blendtec at Costco 6 years ago), but also because my sister raves about her’s, it comes with a 7-year warranty (!!!), and because we wanted to see if it lives up to the hype. So far, it certainly does.

We also love that our Vitamix (we got the Explorian Series ‘super pack’ - E320) came with a 64oz container, a great size when you’re making smoothies and soups for a family of 5! The super pack also comes with two 20oz travel cups and an adapter, which is perfect for meals on the go.

I’m also impressed by how simple the Vitamix controls are. It’s basically on/off and then you adjust the power - hard to mess up.

The Vitamix is also quieter than our Blendtec was.

Our smoothie recipe

Need a good green smoothie recipe? We make these almost every day and our kids even eat them. We use the same components in all of our smoothies and adjust depending on what’s in season, what we have at home, and how many we’re feeding. Here are the basic components:

  • oat and/or coconut milk

  • dry ingredients like flax seed, unsweetened coconut, protein powder

  • greens

  • fresh fruit/veggies

  • frozen fruit or ice

We like to top our’s with granola, fresh fruit, and/or yogurt.

So there you have it…why a high-powered blender is an essential part of our kitchen!
